Job Summary
Job Purpose
To lead the operation, maintenance, upgrading, commissioning and certification of high- and maximum-containment laboratory facilities. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with national and international biosafety, biosecurity, engineering and occupational safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee biosafety, biosecurity and engineering operations within high-containment laboratory facilities.
Lead technical teams responsible for laboratory design, construction, upgrades, maintenance and certification.
Develop and implement biosafety procedures, operational guidelines, emergency response plans and training programmes.
Manage capital expenditure and operational budgets for infrastructure, equipment and maintenance projects.
Oversee commissioning, inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance, and annual facility certification.
Ensure compliance with applicable biosafety, biosecurity and occupational health and safety standards.
Advise senior management on bio-risk management and facility safety, including the authority to stop unsafe work.
Implement engineering maintenance policies and ensure the reliability of building systems and infrastructure.
Coordinate engineering support for mobile containment laboratories during disease outbreaks and field deployments.
Monitor emerging technologies and developments in biosafety and biosecurity.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering (NQF Level 7).
Recognised local and international training and certification in biosafety, biosecurity or related fields.
At least 7 years' post-qualification experience in the technical and managerial aspects of high-containment microbiological or biomedical laboratories.
At least 5 years' experience supervising or managing technical teams in a relevant laboratory or engineering environment.
