Job Description

The Technical Migration Lead is responsible for overseeing and managing the end-to-end migration of technical systems, applications, and data within a banking and finance environment. This role ensures that migration projects are planned, executed, and delivered efficiently, with minimal disruption to business operations. The position requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and stakeholder management skills to coordinate cross-functional teams and external vendors throughout the migration lifecycle.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Owns end-to-end technical solutions, mapping and orchestration.
• Lead and manage the planning, coordination, and execution of complex technical migration projects, ensuring alignment with business objectives and timelines.
• Develop detailed migration strategies, including risk assessments, contingency plans, and resource allocation.
• Collaborate with business units, technical teams, and third-party suppliers to ensure clear communication and smooth migration processes.
• Oversee the preparation and validation of migration environments, including data extraction, transformation, and loading activities.
• Monitor migration progress, identify potential issues, and implement corrective actions to maintain project schedules and quality standards.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, security policies, and internal governance frameworks throughout the migration process.
• Provide regular status reports and updates to senior management and project stakeholders.
• Facilitate post-migration reviews to assess outcomes, capture lessons learned, and recommend improvements for future initiatives.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation related to migration plans, processes, and technical configurations.
• Support knowledge transfer and training sessions to operational teams following migration completion.

Required Qualifications

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Professional certification in project management or migration methodologies is advantageous.

Experience

• Minimum of five years’ experience in technical migration roles within the banking, finance, or related IT sectors.
• Proven track record of successfully leading large-scale migration projects involving complex technical environments.
• Experience working with legacy systems and cloud-based platforms is preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate external vendors.

Knowledge and Skills

• Data architecture, ETL/ELT, cloud, governance.
• Strong understanding of technical migration concepts, tools, and best practises.
• In-depth knowledge of data migration, application migration, and infrastructure migration processes.
• Familiarity with banking and financial services technology landscapes and regulatory frameworks.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to analyse complex technical issues and develop practical solutions under pressure.
• Competency in project management software and collaboration tools.
• Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification in PRINCE2, Agile, or other recognised project management methodologies.
• Experience with cloud migration platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Knowledge of security standards relevant to banking and finance, including data protection and information security management.

Working Conditions

• The role is based in Johannesburg, Gauteng, requiring presence at client and project sites as necessary.
• Expected to work full-time hours with the possibility of extended hours to meet project deadlines.
• Contractual position with a defined project duration and potential for extension based on performance and business needs.
