Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Safety Officer to join our asphalt plant operations team. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and maintaining occupational health, safety, and environmental standards to ensure a safe working environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors. The role requires a hands-on professional with experience in asphalt production, heavy industrial operations, or road construction.
Key Responsibilities:
• Ensure compliance with all applicable occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation, company policies, and industry standards.
• Conduct regular inspections of the asphalt plant, workshops, fuel storage areas, stockpiles, laboratories, and surrounding work areas.
• Identify workplace hazards, conduct risk assessments, and implement appropriate control measures.
• Develop, review, and maintain safe work procedures, Job Hazard Analyses, and Safe Work Method Statements.
• Investigate incidents, accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, prepare reports, and monitor the implementation of corrective actions.
• Conduct safety inductions, toolbox talks, emergency response training, and ongoing safety awareness programmes.
• Monitor compliance with permit-to-work systems, Lockout/Tagout procedures, confined space entry, working at heights, hot work, and other critical safety controls.
• Ensure the correct use and availability of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Monitor contractor compliance with site safety requirements and company procedures.
• Coordinate emergency preparedness activities, including fire drills, spill response, and evacuation exercises.
• Ensure environmental compliance relating to dust suppression, emissions, noise control, hazardous substances, waste management, and spill prevention.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, incidents, training, risk assessments, and statutory documentation.
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly HSE reports for management.
• Participate in internal and external HSE audits and support continuous improvement initiatives.
• Promote a positive safety culture by encouraging employee participation and proactive hazard reporting.
Requirements
• National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management, or a related field.
• SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, or equivalent health and safety qualification will be an advantage.
• Registration with the relevant professional body
• Minimum of 2–5 years' experience in a Health and Safety role.
• Sound knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and industry best practices.
• Strong communication, report writing, and problem-solving skills.
• Computer literacy (Microsoft Office).
Experience
• Minimum of 3–5 years' experience as a Safety Officer in an asphalt plant, quarry, road construction, mining, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environment.
• Experience working with continoue’s or batch asphalt plants is highly desirable.
• Practical knowledge of heavy mobile equipment, conveyors, crushers, hot bitumen handling, fuel systems, and plant maintenance activities.
• Proven experience conducting incident investigations, safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
