We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Laboratory Manager to lead the operations of our asphalt and construction materials laboratory. The successful candidate will oversee laboratory testing, quality assurance programmes, staff supervision, and compliance with industry standards to ensure that civil engineering materials meet client specifications and regulatory requirements Key Responsibilities • Manage the day-to-day operations of the asphalt, concrete soil and aggregates laboratory, ensuring the efficient delivery of testing services. • Supervise, mentor, and develop laboratory technicians and support staff. • Oversee the testing of asphalt binders, asphalt mixtures, aggregates, bitumen, and related construction materials. • Ensure laboratory testing is conducted in accordance with applicable standards, including AASHTO or national specifications. • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). • Ensure compliance with quality management systems, including ISO accreditation requirements where applicable. • Review, verify, and approve laboratory test results and technical reports. • Monitor laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) programmes and implement corrective actions where required. • Manage calibration, maintenance, and verification of laboratory equipment and testing instruments. • Plan laboratory workloads and ensure projects are completed within agreed timelines. • Prepare laboratory budgets and manage procurement of laboratory equipment, consumables, and testing materials. • Support pavement design, mix design validation, research, and product development activities. • Coordinate laboratory audits, proficiency testing, and accreditation assessments. • Ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements. • Liaise with clients, engineers, contractors, consultants, and regulatory authorities on technical matters. Minimum Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Geo-tech Engineering, Materials Engineering, Construction Materials Technology, Chemistry, or a related field. • Minimum of 5 years' experience in an asphalt, bitumen, or construction materials testing laboratory. • At least 3 years' experience in a supervisory or management role. • Sound knowledge of asphalt mix design, aggregate testing, bitumen testing, and pavement materials. • Thorough understanding of AASHTO, ISO, or equivalent testing standards. • Experience implementing and maintaining laboratory quality management systems. • Strong leadership, planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is an advantage Preferred Skills • Master’s degree in civil engineering, Pavement Engineering, or Materials Engineering. • Professional registration with a recognised engineering or scientific body. • Experience with Superpave, Marshall, or other asphalt mix design methodologies. • Experience supporting road construction, infrastructure, or consulting projects.
