Job Summary
A Guide & Lodge Management Couple at a 5-star game lodge is a dual-role position where one partner typically focuses on field guiding and guest safari experiences ; while the other manages lodge operations, guest relations, and administration . In many cases, both partners overlap in guest experience delivery. Guide (Field Guide / Trails Guide) Responsibilities Guest Safari Experience Conduct morning; afternoon, and night game drives Lead guided bush walks (if qualified with trails/back-up rifle certification) Interpret wildlife behavior, ecology, and conservation topics Ensure a luxury; educational, and safe guest experience Tailor drives to guest interests (photography, birding, Big 5, etc.) Safety & Compliance Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols during drives and walks Maintain firearms competency (if applicable) Conduct vehicle checks and ensure guests are briefed on safety procedures Vehicle & Equipment Management Maintain safari vehicles in excellent condition Keep equipment (binoculars, radios, rifles, spotlight) operational Report maintenance issues promptly Conservation & Reserve Duties Participate in conservation initiatives and anti-poaching awareness Assist with reserve monitoring, sightings logs, and biodiversity tracking Guest Interaction Host guests throughout their stay (meals, fireside chats, storytelling) Build relationships and deliver 5-star personalized service Lodge Manager / Hospitality Partner Responsibilities Guest Experience & Relations Oversee the entire guest journey from arrival to departure Handle check-ins, special requests, dietary requirements, and complaints Ensure exceptional service standards aligned with 5-star expectations Create memorable experiences (romantic setups, bush dinners, celebrations) Staff Management Lead; train, and manage lodge staff (housekeeping, F&B, maintenance) Conduct performance management and staff development Maintain staff morale and team culture Food & Beverage Oversight Coordinate with chefs on menus and dietary needs Ensure high standards of food quality, presentation, and service Oversee stock control, ordering, and cost management Administration & Financial Control Manage budgets, cost controls, and reporting Handle reservations, occupancy, and guest billing Oversee stock, procurement, and supplier relationships Housekeeping & Maintenance Ensure rooms and public areas meet luxury standards Conduct routine inspections Coordinate maintenance and repairs Joint Responsibilities as a Couple Overall Lodge Operations Work as a team to ensure smooth day-to-day operations Step into each other’s roles when needed (especially in smaller lodges) Be hands-on and visible hosts Guest Hosting Entertain guests during meals, around the fire, and during activities Deliver a personalized; warm, and engaging experience Planning & Coordination Manage daily schedules (game drives, meals, activities) Coordinate between departments for seamless service Problem Solving Handle emergencies, guest complaints, and operational issues efficiently Maintain composure and professionalism under pressure Typical Qualifications & Requirements Guide Partner FGASA Level 1/2 (minimum), Trails Guide advantageous Valid PDP & driver’s license First Aid certification Strong bush knowledge (fauna, flora, birding) Lodge Manager Partner Diploma/Degree in Hospitality Management Experience in 5-star lodge or boutique hotel operations Strong administrative and leadership skills Both Previous experience working in remote lodge environments Excellent communication and interpersonal skills High level of adaptability and resilience Passion for hospitality and wildlife
