Purpose of the Role
The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the installation, configuration, administration, monitoring, performance, security, and availability of enterprise database environments. The role ensures databases remain reliable, secure, highly available, and optimised to support business-critical applications while working closely with infrastructure, cloud, development, and application support teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Database Administration
• Install, configure, upgrade, patch, and maintain database environments.
• Administer and support Microsoft SQL Server and/or other enterprise database platforms.
• Monitor database health, availability, and capacity.
• Perform routine database maintenance and housekeeping activities.
• Manage database storage, indexing, partitioning, and optimisation.
2. Performance & Optimisation
• Monitor database performance and proactively resolve bottlenecks.
• Analyse and optimise SQL queries and stored procedures.
• Implement performance tuning best practices.
• Support application teams with database performance improvements.
3. Backup, Recovery & High Availability
• Develop and maintain backup and recovery strategies.
• Perform database restores and disaster recovery testing.
• Configure and maintain high availability and replication solutions where applicable.
• Ensure business continuity through resilient database architectures.
4. Security & Compliance
• Implement database security best practices.
• Manage user access, permissions, and authentication.
• Ensure compliance with organisational security standards and governance policies.
• Support auditing and compliance initiatives.
5. Cloud & Infrastructure Support
• Support databases hosted on-premise and within cloud environments.
• Exposure to AWS database services (such as Amazon RDS, Aurora, EC2-hosted SQL environments) will be advantageous.
• Experience with Azure database services will also be considered beneficial.
• Work closely with infrastructure and cloud teams to maintain stable environments.
6. Monitoring & Incident Management
• Monitor database alerts and respond to incidents.
• Perform root cause analysis for database-related issues.
• Resolve production incidents within agreed SLAs.
• Participate in after-hours support and maintenance activities where required.
7. Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
• Work closely with developers, architects, infrastructure, and application support teams.
• Recommend improvements to database architecture and operational processes.
• Maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.
• Participate in database upgrades, migrations, and transformation initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
• Relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
• 5+ years' experience as a Database Administrator.
• Strong experience administering Microsoft SQL Server environments.
• Experience with database backup, recovery, performance tuning, and security.
• Experience supporting production database environments.
• Exposure to cloud platforms, preferably AWS, would be advantageous but is not essential.
• Experience with database monitoring tools and automation would be beneficial.
Technical Skills
• Microsoft SQL Server Administration.
• SQL scripting and query optimisation.
• Backup and recovery solutions.
• High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR).
• Performance monitoring and tuning.
• Database security and access management.
• Windows Server administration exposure.
• Exposure to AWS database services (preferred) or Azure cloud environments.
• PowerShell or other scripting experience advantageous.
