Job Summary
The Safari Manager is responsible for overseeing all safari operations, ensuring exceptional guest experiences while maintaining the highest standards of safety, conservation, and operational efficiency. This role manages the guiding team, safari vehicle fleet, bush walking activities, anti-poaching awareness initiatives, and the maintenance of all safari equipment. The Safari Manager plays a key role in wildlife conservation, staff development, and delivering world-class safari experiences. Key Responsibilities • Manage the daily operations of the safari department. • Lead, mentor, and supervise Field Guides, Head Rangers, and Trackers. • Coordinate and oversee all game drives and guided bush walks. • Ensure exceptional guest experiences through professional guiding and interpretation. • Develop and implement guide training and development programmes. • Prepare duty rosters, leave schedules, and performance reviews for the guiding team. • Oversee the operation, servicing, maintenance, and roadworthiness of the safari vehicle fleet. • Maintain records of vehicle servicing, inspections, and repairs. • Ensure all safari equipment, radios, first aid kits, recovery gear, and firearms are properly maintained and compliant. • Ensure all bush walking activities are conducted safely and in accordance with FGASA and reserve regulations. • Promote and enforce best practices for guest safety during game drives and walking safaris. • Work closely with reserve management on wildlife monitoring and conservation initiatives. • Support and maintain awareness of anti-poaching operations and protocols, ensuring guides understand reporting procedures and security measures. • Monitor wildlife sightings and maintain accurate ecological records. • Ensure compliance with reserve policies, environmental legislation, and health and safety regulations. • Assist with budgeting, departmental planning, and operational reporting. • Liaise with the Lodge Manager and other departments to ensure seamless guest experiences. • Handle guest feedback and resolve operational issues promptly and professionally. • Foster a culture of conservation, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Minimum Qualifications • Grade 12 (Matric). • FGASA Level 2 (Level 3 or Professional Field Guide preferred). • FGASA Lead Trails Guide (ARH – Advanced Rifle Handling) qualification. • ARH (Advanced Rifle Handling) certification is essential. • DEAT/NDT Registered Guide. • Valid First Aid Level 1 Certificate (Level 2 advantageous). • Valid Driver's Licence with PrDP. • Valid Firearm Competency Certificate. Experience • Minimum of 5 years' experience as a Field Guide in a luxury safari lodge or private game reserve. • Minimum of 2–3 years' experience in a supervisory or Safari Manager/Head Ranger role. • Proven experience managing a safari vehicle fleet, including maintenance scheduling and operational readiness. • Demonstrated experience conducting guided bush walks. • Knowledge of anti-poaching awareness, reserve security procedures, and conservation operations. • Experience working within a 5-star luxury lodge environment is highly advantageous.
