The Process Safety Design Engineer is responsible for developing and integrating process safety strategies and engineering solutions into facility designs, ensuring compliance with international safety standards and reducing operational risk across oil & gas facilities. This role involves working across multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective engineering solutions in both greenfield and brownfield projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and support process safety design activities across project lifecycle stages (conceptual, FEED, detailed design).
Conduct Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL studies.
Develop and maintain safety documentation including Bow-Tie diagrams, safety philosophies, Cause & Effect charts, and fire & explosion risk assessments (FERA).
Design and specify safety systems such as ESD, fire and gas detection, relief systems, and pressure protection devices.
Perform quantitative risk assessments (QRA), dispersion modeling, and consequence analysis.
Ensure designs meet local and international codes and standards (API, IEC, NFPA, ISO, OSHA, etc.).
Support development and review of Safety Cases, SIMOPS plans, and emergency response plans.
Interface with process, piping, instrumentation, mechanical and civil engineers for integrated safety solutions.
Participate in design reviews (3D model reviews, P&ID reviews, constructability and operability reviews).
Provide technical input to procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational teams.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field.
Postgraduate training in Process Safety Engineering (preferred).
Professional Engineering Registration (e.g., PrEng, CEng, PE) is advantageous.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong knowledge of process safety design principles and risk assessment techniques.
Proficiency in process simulation tools and safety analysis software (e.g., PHAST, PIPENET, DNV GL, PHA-Pro).
Familiarity with international oil & gas safety regulations and standards.
Ability to interpret and develop PFDs, P&IDs, and engineering drawings.
Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, and report writing skills.
Highly analytical with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Attention to detail with a commitment to operational integrity and safety.
Experience:
5–10 years of experience in process safety and risk management within the oil & gas, petrochemical, or energy sector.
Demonstrated experience in design and review of safety systems for upstream, midstream, or downstream facilities.
