PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Content Developer is responsible for designing, developing, updating and maintaining engaging learning content and training material that supports operational excellence across the business.
The role requires someone who can take business processes, operational requirements, SOPs and subject-matter expertise and convert them into practical, easy-to-understand learning interventions for employees at different levels of the organisation.
This is not purely a graphic design or administrative position. The successful candidate must understand how people learn, how to structure information logically, and how to translate complex operational information into training content that can be applied in a fast-paced restaurant and retail environment.
The individual must be comfortable working closely with operational teams, Training Managers, subject-matter experts and business leaders to ensure that training material remains current, relevant and aligned to the realities of the business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Learning Content Development:
Design and develop training material for operational, leadership, compliance and behavioural learning programmes.
Convert operational processes, SOPs, policies and technical information into clear, practical learning content.
Develop facilitator guides, learner manuals, workbooks, assessments, quick-reference guides and job aids.
Create structured learning journeys for different employee groups and levels.
Develop onboarding and induction content for new employees.
Develop refresher and remedial training material where performance gaps are identified.
Ensure learning material is engaging, practical and appropriate for the target audience.
Digital Learning Content:
Develop content suitable for digital and blended learning environments.
Create or support the creation of e-learning modules, presentations, videos, quizzes and interactive learning activities.
Work with relevant platforms and learning technologies to convert traditional training material into digital learning.
Assist with scripts and storyboards for training videos and other multimedia content.
Ensure digital learning content is visually engaging without compromising learning outcomes.
Operational Training Content:
Develop training content relating to areas such as:
Restaurant operations
Customer service
Food safety and hygiene
Health and safety
Standard operating procedures
Product knowledge
New product launches
Restaurant management
Stock and inventory management
Financial and P&L fundamentals
People management
Leadership development
Performance management
Compliance
New store openings
Operational systems and processes
Content Maintenance and Quality Control:
Review existing learning material and identify content requiring improvement or updating.
Maintain version control across learning material.
Ensure training material remains aligned with current policies, SOPs and business practices.
Proofread and quality-check learning material before implementation.
Ensure consistency in language, terminology, design and learning methodology.
·Maintain a central content library and structured filing system.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Work closely with Training Managers, Operations, HR and other departments to understand learning requirements.
Interview subject-matter experts to extract relevant information and convert it into structured learning content.
Participate in operational visits to understand how processes work in practice.
Gather feedback from trainers and learners and continuously improve learning material.
Support business initiatives, new store launches and changes to operational processes through relevant training content.
Learning Assessment:
Develop knowledge assessments, practical assessments, quizzes and evaluation tools.
Assist with competency-based learning assessments.
Ensure assessments measure the learning outcomes identified for each programme.
Analyse feedback and assessment results to identify opportunities to improve learning content.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Diploma or Degree in Learning & Development, Education, Instructional Design, Human Resources, Communications or a related field.
Approximately 2–5 years' experience in learning content development, instructional design or training material development.
Experience developing structured training material from beginning to end.
Strong written English and exceptional attention to detail.
Strong Microsoft PowerPoint and Word skills.
Ability to simplify complex information into clear and practical learning content.
Experience working with multiple stakeholders and subject-matter experts.
HIGHLY ADVANTAGEOUS:
Previous experience within QSR, restaurants, retail, FMCG, hospitality or another high-volume operational environment.
Experience developing content for frontline and operational employees.
Experience with e-learning authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Canva, Adobe Captivate or similar.
Exposure to Learning Management Systems.
Experience creating video-based or multimedia learning content.
Understanding of adult learning principles and instructional design methodology.
Exposure to SETA, skills development or accredited training environments would be advantageous but is not essential.
