Refrigeration Technician
Role Overview
The Refrigeration Technician repairs and maintains commercial refrigerated display cabinets and self-contained freezer systems. Based in Johannesburg, this role supports retail clients, primarily Shoprite, with both locally manufactured units and imported Fricon systems.
Key Responsibilities
Field Maintenance & Repairs
- Repair locally manufactured refrigerated display units.
- Service imported Fricon self-contained freezer systems.
- Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical component failures.
- Diagnose refrigerant leaks and execute safe recoveries.
- Perform brazing, evacuation, and precise system re-charging.
Client Relations & Service Delivery
- Serve as primary technician for Shoprite stores.
- Maintain professional relationships with retail store managers.
- Respond promptly to urgent breakdown service calls.
- Ensure minimal disruption to client retail operations.
Quality & Compliance
- Conduct pre-delivery inspections on imported Fricon units.
- Complete detailed service reports after every visit.
- Adhere strictly to OHS Act safety regulations.
- Manage truck stock, tools, and recovery cylinders.
Job Requirements
Qualifications & Licenses
- Qualified Artisan (Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Test Certificate).
- Valid SARACCA Safe Handling of Refrigerants Registration (Category A or B).
- Valid Code 8 (Class B) South African driver’s license.
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of commercial refrigeration experience.
- Proven experience with supermarket display cases and multiplex systems.
- Direct experience troubleshooting self-contained/plug-in freezer units.
- Working knowledge of Fricon or similar European imported brands is highly advantageous.
Skills & Competencies
- Deep understanding of commercial refrigeration cycles.
- Strong electrical fault-finding capabilities (control panels, thermostats, fans).
- Ability to work independently under tight retail deadlines.
- Fluent in English; strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Flexibility to work standby shifts, weekends, and overtime.
