Job Summary
PKF Accounting is seeking a detail-oriented and technically strong Senior Accountant to join our accounting team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a portfolio of clients, overseeing full accounting functions, and ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. This role requires a proactive individual who thrives in a deadline-driven, multi-client environment and can engage professionally with clients and internal stakeholders.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES, but will not be limited to:
Client Accounting & Financial Management
- Manage full accounting function for a portfolio of clients across various industries
- Perform bookkeeping up to trial balance and balance sheet level
- Prepare and review:
- Monthly management accounts
- Income statements and balance sheets
- Cash flow reports
- Conduct detailed balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in line with accounting standards
Tax & Compliance
- Prepare and submit VAT returns (VAT201) and ensure compliance with SARS regulations
- Assist with provisional and annual tax calculations where required
- Ensure adherence to all statutory deadlines and regulatory requirements
- Liaise with SARS on queries, audits, and submissions
Payroll Administration
- Process payroll for multiple clients
- Prepare and submit VAT returns (VAT201) and ensure compliance with SARS regulations
- Perform EMP501 reconciliations and submissions
- Perform OID reconciliations and submissions
- Ensure compliance with PAYE, UIF, SDL and OID regulations
- Work with payroll systems to maintain accuracy and confidentiality
Client Relationship Management
- Act as a primary point of contact for clients on accounting-related matters
- Provide financial insights and support to clients and directors
- Build and maintain strong, professional client relationships
- Communicate effectively regarding deadlines, deliverables, and financial performance
Operational & Team Support
- Work collaboratively with junior accountants and provide guidance where required
- Assist with process improvements and efficiencies within the accounting function
- Ensure all work is completed accurately and within deadlines
- Support partners/directors with ad hoc financial and operational requests
REQUIREMENTS & COMPETENCIES:
- Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 3–5 years’ experience in an accounting or similar role
- Experience within an accounting firm or multi-client environment is highly advantageous
- Strong knowledge of:
- Bookkeeping principles up to trial balance
- VAT and payroll legislation
- Financial reporting and reconciliations
- Proficiency in accounting software (preferably Xero)
- Experience with payroll systems (preferably SimplePay)
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines simultaneously
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
