Ready to build a career in recruitment?

Square 1 Recruitment is looking for a Junior Recruitment Consultant (Candidate Focused) to join our small, specialist recruitment business.

You might already have some recruitment experience and be ready for more, come from a sales or customer-facing background and be looking for a career change, or be a graduate looking for the right place to start.

You'll work closely with an experienced Managing Consultant, learning the recruitment process while gaining hands-on exposure to assignments across South Africa's engineering, mining, manufacturing and technical sectors.

Your initial focus will be on the candidate side of recruitment, with increasing responsibility as your skills and confidence develop.

What You'll Be Doing

• Work alongside the Managing Consultant on a variety of recruitment assignments.
  
• Write and publish job adverts and manage applications.
  
• Proactively source candidates using PNET, LinkedIn, Zoho Recruit and other platforms.
  
• Learn Boolean searching, database mining and headhunting techniques.
  
• Screen CVs, conduct telephone screenings and interview candidates.
  
• Build relationships with candidates and manage communication throughout the recruitment process.
  
• Coordinate interviews, documentation, references and background checks.
  
• Maintain accurate information within our Zoho Recruit ATS.
  
• Learn how to prepare and present shortlisted candidates to clients.
  
• Gradually gain exposure to client interaction and the broader 360 recruitment process.
  
• Contribute to social media, recruitment marketing and other areas of the business.
  
• Use AI and emerging technologies as part of modern recruitment and sourcing.
  

Requirements

Previous recruitment experience would be ideal, but it isn't essential.

You could be:

• An early-career recruiter with around 1–2 years' experience looking to develop further.
  
• Someone from internal sales, technical sales or another customer-facing environment looking for a career change.
  
• A recent graduate looking to start a professional career in recruitment.
  

What we do need:

• Matric is essential; a tertiary qualification would be advantageous.
  
• Strong computer literacy and a genuine confidence working with technology.
  
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  
• Confidence speaking to people, particularly over the telephone.
  
• Good attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
  
• The discipline to work independently in a work-from-home environment.
  
• A willingness to learn and take on increasing responsibility.
  
• A warm, engaging and professional personality with a natural ability to build relationships.
  

Requirements

We're open-minded about where you've come from. Previous recruitment experience would be ideal, but it isn't essential. We're ultimately looking for someone with the aptitude, personality and potential to develop into a successful Recruitment Consultant.

You could be:

• An early-career recruiter with around 1–2 years' recruitment, resourcing or talent-sourcing experience who is ready for more responsibility.
  
• Someone from an internal sales, customer-facing or technical sales environment who enjoys working with people and would like to transfer those skills into recruitment.
  
• A recent university graduate looking for an opportunity to start and develop a professional career.
  

Whichever route you've taken, there are a few things we do need:

• Matric is essential. A tertiary qualification would be advantageous but is not compulsory.
  
• You must be highly computer literate and genuinely comfortable with technology. Recruitment at Square 1 is digitally driven, and you'll spend much of your working day using an ATS, online recruitment platforms, databases, Microsoft applications and other technology.
  
• You need to be confident communicating with people, particularly over the telephone.
  
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  
• Good attention to detail and the ability to work accurately with information.
  
• The ability to organise your own day, follow through on tasks and work effectively in a work-from-home environment.
  
• A genuine appetite for learning. Recruitment means continually learning about different jobs, industries, technologies, companies and people.
  
• And importantly, we're looking for someone with a great personality — warm, engaging, curious, professional and comfortable building relationships with different kinds of people.
