As our Legal, Compliance and Risk Manager, you will take responsibility for protecting our global business operations and field programs. By providing clear, actionable counsel and implementing company-wide risk frameworks, you systematically eliminate legal and commercial exposure. Your work ensures that Bushwise operates with absolute integrity across all markets, allowing us to safely execute our mission of developing the next generation of expert field guides and conservationists.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Multi-Jurisdictional Research: Research international legislation, regulations, and multi-jurisdictional laws to provide clear, actionable legal advice that guides business strategy and mitigates risk.
  

• Contract Management: Draft, review, and format complex commercial contracts, agreements, and partnership documentation.
  

• Labour Compliance: Review, advise on, and sign off on employment contracts to ensure total compliance with relevant local and international labour laws.
  

• Corporate Governance: Handle corporate governance and legal compliance duties to systematically eliminate legal and commercial exposure.
  

• Risk Register Architecture: Design, implement, and maintain company-wide risk registers and operational safety frameworks to systematically track and mitigate business liabilities.
  

• Dispute Resolution: Advise on South African labor law and independently manage and resolve employment disputes.
  

• Field Risk Mitigation: Identify, assess, and mitigate on-the-ground risks associated with operational field locations or academic programs.
  

• In-House Administration: Balance strategic legal advisory tasks with the day-to-day administrative duties required of an in-house legal function.
  

Requirements

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM

• LLB degree (or equivalent professional law degree).
  

• 2+ years of post-qualification experience (PQE) working as an In-House Legal Counsel, Corporate Legal Advisor, or in an equivalent role.
  

• Proven experience researching legislation, regulations, and the general laws of different international jurisdictions to deliver actionable advice.
  

• Strong background in drafting, reviewing, and formatting complex commercial contracts.
  

• Experience reviewing and advising on employment contracts for local and international labour law compliance.
  

• Demonstrated experience handling corporate governance and legal compliance duties to mitigate risk.
  

• Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining company-wide risk registers or operational safety frameworks.
  

• Solid experience advising on South African labour law and independently managing employment disputes.
  

Bonus if you also have:

• Experience identifying, assessing, and mitigating on-the-ground risks associated with operational field or academic programs.
  

• Legal experience working within a multi-company group structure.
  

• Experience working with entities spanning international travel and/or education sectors.
  

• Experience balancing legal advisory tasks with the hands-on administrative duties of an in-house legal team.
  

• A proven track record of collaborating across multi-functional teams to drive contract negotiations.
  

• Experience auditing commercial insurance policies to ensure proper coverage and liability protection.
  

• Experience managing high-stakes operational crises, emergency incidents, or serious health and safety field escalations.
  

• Experience in structuring and leading internal investigations regarding employment misconduct or compliance violations.
