The SA Steelworks Division has a position for a qualified, committed, hardworking and motivated Production Manager at our SA Steelworks plant in Cape Town.
The Rolling Mill Production Manager is responsible for overseeing the entire rolling process, ensuring that production targets are met efficiently while maintaining strict safety and quality standards. This role bridges the gap between strategic planning and shop-floor execution.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to
- Provide overall leadership and management of the Rolling Mill operations, ensuring production targets, quality standards, and operational objectives are achieved in line with business requirements.
- Direct and manage Rolling Mill teams, including Line Managers and production personnel, through effective supervision, performance management, coaching, and succession planning.
- Plan, implement, and oversee production schedules while ensuring optimal utilisation of plant, equipment, and human resources to maximise operational efficiency and minimise downtime.
- Manage operational performance by monitoring key production metrics and KPIs, analysing downtime and breakdowns, and implementing corrective actions to improve productivity and reliability.
- Oversee workforce management, including staff rosters, absenteeism, disciplinary processes, and the development of a high-performing production team.
- Lead and drive continuous improvement initiatives within the Rolling Mill through the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and improve operational processes.
- Ensure effective coordination with engineering and maintenance teams to plan preventative maintenance and maintain operational continuity.
- Maintain accountability for compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards, ensuring strict adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and company policies.
- Provide strategic operational reporting to senior management, including immediate escalation of breakdowns, product failures, safety incidents, or risks that may impact production targets or operational performance.
- Ensure strong operational governance through accurate reporting, adherence to company policies, and the consistent enforcement of standards across the Rolling Mill operations.
Applicants must have the following qualifying criteria:
- Matric (Maths compulsory)
- Tertiary education in metallurgical or chemical industry will be an advantage
- Strong aptitude for science and mathematics
- Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering principles and practice
- Must be computer literate (Microsoft Office)
- Excellent Communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in a production or mechanical environment;
- A motivated, self-driven individual able to perform well with minimum supervision;
- Ability to work under challenging conditions
- Must have basic knowledge of Health & Safety Rules
- In good health, physically fit

Standard hours
- 07:00 – 19:00 Dayshifts
- 19:00 – 07:00 Nightshift
Works rotating shifts and roster detailing exact work hours will be supplied
May be required to work overtime as per operational requirements
Requirements
Minimum 8 years’ experience in a production or mechanical environment
