Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Newlands; Cape Town The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician will be responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems. You will ensure all equipment operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with industry standards and regulations. Part of your role will be to install mechanical components, piping, electrical wiring, and control systems, and to ensure proper electrical connections, refrigerant charging, and system sealing to prevent leaks. In addition, you will clean, lubricate, and replace parts such as filters, belts, fans, and coils to maintain efficiency, as well as service refrigeration units, cold rooms, and freezer systems. You will perform scheduled preventive maintenance to prevent breakdowns (clean coils, replace filters, check refrigerant levels) and inspect condensers, evaporators, compressors, fans and other systems for wear or failure. To record and report all maintenance work and system status, diagnose faults, and carry out timely repairs will form part of your duties, as will ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards and responding promptly to maintenance requests. You will perform routine maintenance on guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces, respond promptly to guest maintenance requests, and troubleshoot HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Lastly, you will support kitchen equipment maintenance and monitor boilers, chillers, water heaters and generators. You have a Diploma or certificate in HVAC, refrigeration, or mechanical engineering, and relevant technical certification or trade qualification, with 2 - 5 years’ experience in HVAC and refrigeration systems, including knowledge of refrigerants, safe handling, and environmental compliance. You bring strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, and manuals. With your good communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team, you excel in dynamic environments. You hold a valid driver’s license and demonstrate flexibility to work shifts or be on call when needed. Your time management and prioritisation skills ensure tasks are completed efficiently. At the same time, your basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC, paired with the ability to lift heavy equipment, makes you a valuable asset for all hands-on operational needs.
