SalaryR25,000.00 per month

1. POSITION OVERVIEW

The Safety Officer will be responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable health, safety and environmental legislation, company requirements and project-specific safety standards. The role will support the implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of SHE practices across project sites.

The successful candidate will ensure that employees, contractors, subcontractors, clients and visitors operate within a safe working environment and that all required safety documentation, audits, investigations and reporting are completed effectively.

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Health & Safety Compliance

• Utilise current health and safety legislation and/or regulations to ensure that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to ensure the safety and health of employees, clients and visitors.

• Ensure compliance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and project requirements.

• Advise management on changes in legislation and legal requirements.

• Ensure that contractors and subcontractors comply with relevant Health and Safety requirements and company project specifications.

• Implement corrective actions where non-compliant behaviour or unsafe conditions are identified.

• Initiate and participate in disciplinary action against employees who do not adhere to safety policies and procedures.

Incident & Accident Investigation

• Investigate all accidents and incidents.

• Identify root causes and make recommendations to management to prevent recurrence.

• Compile relevant incident and accident investigation documentation and reports.

• Monitor and follow up on corrective actions arising from investigations.

Safety Audits & Inspections

• Conduct regular Safety Audits on project sites.

• Conduct monthly internal audits to ensure full legal compliance.

• Identify non-conformances and develop action plans to address findings.

• Accompany and assist Department of Labour investigations and/or audits as required.

• Monitor implementation and close-out of audit findings.

SHE Management & Employee Engagement

• Encourage employees to actively participate in SHE matters.

• Conduct SHE Committee meetings.

• Promote a positive safety culture across the project.

• Implement action plans to correct non-compliant behaviour and unsafe conditions.

• Provide guidance and support to employees, contractors and subcontractors on SHE requirements.

SHE Documentation & Reporting

• Update and submit monthly Safety, Health and Environmental statistics.

• Create SHE documentation templates as required.

• Compile SHE reports as required.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date SHE records and documentation.

• Ensure that required safety documentation is available and properly maintained on site.

NOSA Compliance

• Manage, implement and report on NOSA audits as required.

• Update documentation in accordance with NOSA audit findings.

• Monitor and support the implementation of corrective actions arising from NOSA audits.

3. EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

• Grade 12 / Matric.

• Registration with SACPCMP.

• Fully proficient in Microsoft Office 365.

• Incident and Accident Investigation qualification.

• Risk Assessor qualification.

• Fall Protection Planner/Developer qualification.

• Working at Heights – minimum Level 2.

• Working in Confined Spaces certificate of competence.

• Fall Protection Planner experience and/or valid certificate.

• First Aid Level 2 – previous certificate or valid certificate with relevant experience.

• Rope Access experience.

• Basic Lifting and Rigging experience.

• HIRA certificate.

• SAMTRAC or equivalent qualification.

4. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum 5 years' experience in a similar Safety Officer role.

• Experience working within project/site-based environments.

• Experience conducting safety audits, inspections and incident investigations.

• Experience dealing with contractors and subcontractors.

• Experience with SHE documentation, reporting and compliance requirements.
