Billing – Senior Tech Lead
5.2.1 Role Summary
The Senior Technical Lead – Billing is accountable for the end-to-end technical leadership, architecture, and operational integrity of Bayobab’s wholesale billing landscape. The role owns the technical design, integration, and execution of high-volume billing platforms supporting international voice, SMS, data, signalling, RBM, RMS and value-added services, ensuring accurate rating, charging, invoicing, settlement, and financial reconciliation. Operating at the intersection of Network, Mediation, Finance, Revenue Assurance, EVA, and external partner ecosystems, the role acts as the technical authority for all billing-related solutions. This includes defining and governing billing architecture, leading complex system integrations, enforcing non-functional requirements (scalability, resilience, performance, security), and providing technical support. The Senior Technical Lead – Billing is responsible for translating commercial and operational requirements into robust, auditable, and automation-enabled billing solutions, while actively reducing revenue leakage, billing disputes, and operational risk. The role provides hands-on technical leadership to internal teams and vendors, ensures compliance with enterprise architecture and regulatory standards, and drives continuous improvement of billing accuracy, controls, and operational efficiency across Bayobab’s business
5.2.2 Responsibilities
1. Produce, review & approve the designs (HLDs, LLDs) and development for new billing capabilities, enhancements, and integrations.
2. Translate business and commercial requirements into technically executable billing solutions.
3. Lead and manage software development teams. Guide project teams on technology strategy related to coding practices, continuous integration, and
automated deployment. Including hands-on guidance to development and configuration teams.
4. Write/review technical documentation and create detailed reports.
5. Ensure adherence to non-functional requirements including performance, scalability, security, and recoverability.
6. Support testing phases including system testing, integration testing, UAT, and billing reconciliation testing.
7. Be hands-on and engage in coding to help the team develop the solution and solve all surfacing problems. Identifies and removes technical impediments.
8. Analyse system requirements and ensure billing accuracy.
9. Define interface contracts, schemas, data validation rules, error handling, and reconciliation mechanisms.
10. Ensure idempotency, data lineage, and traceability across end-to-end billing flows.
11. Ensure compliance with software development standards and processes.
12. Ensure platforms follow the standard security, architecture, compliance & business resilience requirements. Define technical controls to ensure rating and charging accuracy.
13. Implement reconciliation mechanisms between network usage, mediation, billing, EDW, and finance outputs.
14. Support root-cause analysis of billing discrepancies, revenue leakage, and partner disputes.
15. Design proactive monitoring, alerting, and exception management frameworks
16. Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and define permanent corrective actions.
17. Ensure operational documentation is accurate and kept up to date.
18. Support release management, deployment planning, and rollback strategies.
19. Challenge vendor assumptions and ensure Bayobab’s interests are protected.
20. Collaborate closely with Business, Finance, Network, Architecture, and Security teams.
5.2.3 Competencies and Key Skills
i. Deep expertise in wholesale telecommunications billing for voice, SMS, data, signalling, and value-added services
ii. Strong knowledge of rating, charging, discounting, taxation, invoicing, settlement, and partner reconciliation
iii. Experience with high-volume, high-throughput billing environments with strict accuracy and timeliness requirements
iv. Agile Management, Project Management & DevOps experience.
v. Hands-on experience with mediation platforms and CDR/XDR ingestion, validation, enrichment, and error handling
vi. Strong integration skills across APIs, file-based interfaces, message queues, and streaming pipelines
vii. Strong understanding of non-functional requirements including performance, security, disaster recovery, and business continuity
viii. Ability to design and enforce technical controls for billing accuracy and revenue assurance
ix. Experience with release management, deployment planning, and rollback strategies in billing platforms
x. Strong focus on automation of billing runs, validations, reconciliations, and exception handling
