Job Purpose:
To carry out the lay-up, repair, and finishing of composite components on boats, yachts, and other marine vessels using fiberglass, carbon fiber, resin systems, and associated materials. The role ensures structural strength and surface quality of marine parts meet technical and safety specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform wet lay-up, vacuum infusion, or pre-preg composite laminating processes.
Apply gelcoats and resin layers to moulds or vessel surfaces.
Cut, position, and consolidate fiberglass, carbon fiber, or Kevlar materials per laminate schedules.
De-mould, trim, and finish composite parts to required tolerances.
Carry out structural repairs and reinforcements on hulls, decks, hatches, masts, and fittings.
Identify defects such as air pockets, delamination, or resin-rich/lean areas, and correct them efficiently.
Maintain cleanliness of moulds, tools, and work area to avoid contamination.
Follow safety, environmental, and quality control procedures at all times.
Qualifications & Experience:
Minimum:
Matric or equivalent (Grade 12)
Technical trade certificate or relevant training in composites or boatbuilding
Experience:
2+ years of marine laminating or composite manufacturing experience
Experience with hand lay-up, vacuum bagging, or infusion processes
Advantageous:
Knowledge of ISO standards for marine composite work
Boatbuilding or yacht manufacturing background
Skills & Competencies:
In-depth knowledge of fiberglass, carbon fiber, epoxy, polyester, and vinyl resins
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and lamination schedules
Skilled with trimming, sanding, fairing, and finishing composite parts
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to workmanship quality
Physical strength and stamina; ability to work in confined and elevated spaces
Strong safety awareness and ability to use PPE effectively
Working Conditions:
Workshop and onboard environment (boatyard, marina, dry dock)
May involve exposure to resin fumes, dust, and noise
Use of protective clothing and equipment is required
May require shift work, overtime, or weekend availability depending on project timelines
