Research and Development Manager
Midrand | Permanent Position | Reports to Technical & Compliance Manager
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced Research and Development Manager to plan, design, develop, and manufacture innovative food products and technologies using a research-driven process. The successful candidate will be responsible for investigations, testing, modelling, verifications, and comparative analysis — translating findings into informed recommendations and strategic action plans that shape Company's product portfolio.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Process Management
- Project manage and execute all stages of the product development process from concept to launch.
- Support shelf-life testing and reporting.
- Creation, updating, and maintenance of provisional and finished product specifications.
- Ongoing review of labels and specifications.
- Prepare and contribute to technical documents including SOPs and work instructions.
- Oversee purchasing of R&D test equipment and lab supplies.
- Conduct internal audits and provide monthly project reporting.
- Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
Research & Development
- Develop research programmes incorporating current developments to improve existing products and evaluate new product potential.
- Research, design, and evaluate materials, assemblies, processes, and equipment.
- Oversee complex research projects, analyse results, and provide recommendations based on findings.
- Determine and execute improved technologies used by suppliers, competitors, and customers.
- Document all phases of research and development.
- Attend relevant industry conferences.
Collaboration
- Establish project goals and priorities by collaborating with Supply Chain and Operations.
- Support the business in hiring and developing R&D personnel.
- Monitor team metrics and objectives to ensure goals are met.
- Actively lead team engagement, action planning, and implementation.
- Help organise and participate in field trials as required.
- Work closely with internal product teams to understand and address their requirements.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum B-Tech / Advanced Diploma in Food Technology, Biotechnology, or related field
Ideal Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Biology, or Biochemistry
Experience
- 5+ years' experience in a similar role within a high-quality manufacturing or FMCG environment.
- 5+ years' hands-on food product development experience, including a technical leadership role.
- 5+ years' proven project leadership experience.
- Proven knowledge of scientific testing techniques and ability to interpret analytical and microbiological results.
