Job Summary
The Finance Manager is responsible for the strategic and operational financial leadership of the school. This role ensures sound financial management, regulatory compliance, sustainability, and stewardship of resources in alignment with the school’s Christian ethos and commitment to excellence in education.
Key Responsibilities Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and implement the school’s long?term financial strategy in support of its mission and growth objectives.
- Advise the Head of School and Board on financial performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Prepare and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and multi?year financial plans.
- Ensure financial sustainability while supporting academic and infrastructural excellence.
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, creditors, debtors, payroll, and asset management.
- Prepare accurate monthly management accounts and financial reports for leadership and the Board.
- Manage cash flow, investments, and banking relationships.
- Ensure timely preparation of annual financial statements and coordinate external audits.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with South African financial regulations, tax legislation, and independent school requirements.
- Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.
- Support governance structures, including finance and audit committees.
- Oversee risk management relating to finance, insurance, and contracts.
Fee & Revenue Management
- Manage school fee structures, billing, collections, and financial assistance processes.
- Monitor arrears and implement fair, professional collection procedures aligned with the school’s values.
- Support enrolment planning through accurate fee and revenue forecasting.
Procurement & Operations
- Oversee procurement processes to ensure value for money and ethical sourcing.
- Manage supplier relationships and contract negotiations.
- Collaborate with operations and facilities teams on capital expenditure and maintenance planning.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and service orientation.
- Ensure efficient finance office operations and high standards of confidentiality.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (required).
- Professional qualification such as CA(SA), CIMA, or ACCA (highly advantageous).
- Minimum of 5–8 years’ financial management experience, preferably within an independent school, non?profit, or values?based organisation.
- Proven experience in budgeting, financial reporting, audits, and compliance.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of financial governance and best practice.
- Excellent analytical, organisational, and problem?solving skills.
- High level of competence in financial systems and advanced Excel.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non?financial stakeholders.
