Job Summary
A healthcare organisation is seeking a skilled and patient-focused Enrolled Nurse to join their team in Nelspruit. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe, accurate and efficient collection, identification, labelling, handling and transportation of patient specimens, while providing a professional and compassionate patient experience.The ideal candidate will have experience working in a laboratory environment or Primary Healthcare (PHC) clinic, with strong competency in phlebotomy, venepuncture and taking patient vital signs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Confirm and verify patient identification prior to specimen collection
- Verify test requests and required investigations.
- Explain collection procedures clearly to patients.
- Perform venepuncture and phlebotomy safely and professionally.
- Collect blood and other specimens according to established procedures.
- Ensure the correct specimen tubes and collection materials are used.
- Take and accurately record patient vital signs.
- Provide professional and compassionate patient care throughout the collection process.
- Correctly identify and label all specimens.
- Ensure specimen integrity is maintained throughout the collection and handling process.
- Follow established specimen handling, storage and transportation procedures.
- Ensure specimens are transported within the required timeframes.
- Identify and report unsuitable or compromised specimens.
- Adhere to procedures aimed at reducing specimen rejection rates.
- Follow all infection prevention and control protocols.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean, safe and professional collection environment.
- Dispose of sharps and clinical waste correctly.
- Report needlestick injuries, accidents and other incidents promptly.
- Comply with occupational health and safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate patient and specimen collection records.
- Protect patient confidentiality and adhere to relevant privacy requirements.
- Monitor stock and consumable levels.
- Report stock shortages or equipment requirements.
- Maintain collection equipment in accordance with applicable procedures.
- Participate in quality assurance initiatives and maintain required standards.
Minimum Requirements:
- SANC registration as an Enrolled Nurse.
- Recognised phlebotomy qualification and training.
- Minimum of 2 years' relevant phlebotomy/venepuncture experience.
- Demonstrated competency in venepuncture.
- Relevant professional registration/accreditation.
- Experience in a laboratory or Primary Healthcare (PHC) clinic environment.
- Competence in taking and recording patient vital signs.
- Strong patient service and communication skills.
- Good attention to detail and commitment to accurate specimen collection and handling.
