Job Summary
A leading food manufacturing company is seeking a skilled Packaging Technologist to join their team in Ophirton, Johannesburg.The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, testing, and optimising packaging solutions that ensure product integrity, food safety, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and develop primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging for food products
• Conduct packaging trials on semi-automated and fully automated lines
• Evaluate and recommend packaging materials based on cost, sustainability, and performance
• Collaborate with suppliers to source and test new packaging innovations
• Troubleshoot packaging issues during production and implement corrective actions
• Ensure packaging complies with food safety regulations (HACCP, ISO, FDA, EU standards)
• Support New Product Development (NPD) projects from concept to launch
• Maintain accurate packaging specifications, test reports, and documentation
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in packaging processes and materials
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Technology, Food Science, Engineering, or a related field
• 2–4 years’ experience in packaging development within the food industry
• Experience working with semi-automated packaging lines and machinery
• Strong knowledge of food-grade packaging materials (plastics, films, paperboard, etc.)
• Familiarity with packaging compliance, labeling regulations, and sustainability practices
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Experience with packaging design software is advantageous
