JOB TITLE: General Manager – HVAC
REPORTING TO: Managing Director / Executive Board
LOCATION: Pretoria
ROLE OVERVIEW:
The General Manager (HVAC) is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial performance of the HVAC business. This role requires strong leadership, commercial acumen, and deep industry knowledge to drive sustainable growth, profitability, service excellence, and compliance across all divisions including sales, projects, service, installations, and operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Leadership:
• Develop and execute the company’s short-, medium-, and long-term business strategy
• Drive growth through market expansion, new business development, and diversification
• Align operational goals with financial targets and company vision
• Identify industry trends, risks, and opportunities within the HVAC market
Operational Management:"
• Oversee daily operations across HVAC sales, service, maintenance, installations, and projects
• Ensure efficient resource allocation, workflow optimisation, and service delivery
• Implement systems, policies, and procedures to improve productivity and quality
• Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification
Financial Management:
• Full P&L responsibility
• Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and cost controls
• Monitor cash flow, margins, and profitability
• Approve major expenditures and supplier agreements
Sales & Business Development:
• Drive revenue growth and market share
• Oversee pricing strategies, tenders, and major contracts
• Build and maintain relationships with key clients, consultants, suppliers, and stakeholders
• Support the sales team with high-level negotiations and strategic accounts
People Management & Leadership:
• Lead, mentor, and develop senior management and departmental heads
• Build a high-performance, accountable company culture
• Oversee recruitment, performance management, and succession planning
• Ensure compliance with labour legislation and company HR policies
Compliance, Health & Safety:
• Ensure compliance with all relevant industry regulations, standards, and codes
• Maintain strong SHEQ standards across all sites and operations
• Ensure adherence to contractual, legal, and statutory requirements
Stakeholder & Reporting:
• Report performance, risks, and opportunities to the Board / Directors
• Represent the company at industry forums and client meetings
• Maintain strong relationships with regulatory bodies and suppliers
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Management, or related field (essential) or,
• HVAC-related technical qualification (strong advantage) Must have finished a 5 year Technicians apprenticeship with practical qualification.
Experience:
• Minimum 8–10 years’ senior management experience within the HVAC, building services, or engineering sector
• Proven experience managing multi-disciplinary teams
• Strong background in operations, sales, and financial management
• Demonstrated success in growing revenue and improving profitability
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
• Strong leadership and decision-making abilities
• Excellent commercial and financial acumen
• In-depth understanding of HVAC systems, projects, and service environments
• Strategic thinker with hands-on execution capability
• Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills
• Excellent communication (verbal and written)
• High level of integrity, accountability, and professionalism
TECHNICAL & INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE:
• HVAC systems, installations, maintenance, and service contracts
• Building services, compliance standards, and safety regulations
• Project management principles
• ERP, CRM, and reporting systems
• MS Office (advanced)
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid driver’s licence
• Willingness to travel as required
• Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
