Job Summary
Our client is an established, multi-property luxury safari and lodge operator with a growing portfolio across Malawi. This is a single placement for a management couple, not two independent hires: one partner takes on the Country Manager role and the other the Lodge General Manager role. The two positions are set out separately below given the difference in scope and accountability, but this is recruited and filled as one appointment. Malawi is a rewarding country to operate in, with genuinely excellent teams on the ground, but it isn't without its challenges. This role suits leaders who think practically, stay ahead of problems, and keep operations running when circumstances don't cooperate. IDEAL COUPLE PROFILE • Experienced hospitality professionals with complementary skill sets across operations and guest-facing management • Willing to relocate to, and live long-term in, a remote environment • Committed to a long-term placement – this is a stability-focused appointment, not a short-term contract • Due to the remoteness of the location and limited local schooling and veterinary facilities, this placement suits a couple without school-age children or pets POSITION 1: COUNTRY MANAGER The Country Manager carries full operational, financial, and statutory accountability for the Malawi portfolio, providing strategic oversight across three properties with a direct reporting line to the owners. Key Responsibilities • Full operational, financial, and statutory accountability for three properties across Malawi • Budgeting, forecasting, cost control, and monthly financial reporting to the owners • Statutory compliance across labour, tax, environmental, and operational regulations • HR oversight: recruitment, performance management, training, and disciplinary processes • Procurement, supplier relationships, stock control, and logistics across the portfolio • Fleet, infrastructure, and asset management • Representing the company with government, community, and local stakeholders • Crisis management, risk mitigation, and safety compliance country-wide • Support and standard setting across lodge management teams Minimum Requirements • Proven experience as a Country Manager, General Manager, or senior multi-property leader in hospitality, tourism, or lodge operations • Financial literacy with experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets • Working knowledge of HR processes and statutory compliance • Experience managing remote teams across multiple sites, with regular inter-property travel • Previous experience in Africa or remote lodge environments advantageous POSITION 2: LODGE GENERAL The Lodge General Manager runs the daily operation of the primary lodge, ensuring guest experience, staff performance, and departmental coordination are consistently on point. Key Responsibilities • Full day-to-day management of front of house, housekeeping, food and beverage, guest relations, and back of house operations • Guest service standards and direct handling of guest feedback • Staff management: mentoring, training, performance, and morale across the lodge team • Stock control, ordering, and cost management for lodge operations • Lodge standards, SOPs, and service consistency • Health, safety, and hygiene compliance • Hosting and guest engagement as part of daily operations • Reporting to the Country Manager on HR, operations, and planning matters Minimum Requirements • Proven experience as a Lodge Manager, Assistant Manager, or similar senior hospitality role • Experience in luxury lodge environments preferred • Ability to work and lead teams in a remote environment WORK PERMITS & RELOCATION • Initial flights into Malawi are covered by the company • Work permits are facilitated by the company. A standard 2-year permit can take up to 12 months to process; where needed, an interim 6-month Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) with permission to work can be arranged while the longer-term permit is finalised PACKAGE AND BENEFITS • USD $7,500 gross per month (approx. $5,250 net) • Annual flight allowance of USD $1,000 per person • Accommodation: 2-bedroom house on site • All meals included • Company vehicle provided for the Country Manager
