Job Summary
Our client in the telecommunications / wireless internet services industry is seeking to employ an experienced Network Engineer – Level 3 (Senior / Tier 3) to join their Network Operations Centre.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the stability, scalability, optimisation, and performance of the wireless and fibre network infrastructure while managing complex escalations, RF optimisation, routing, and technical mentorship across the engineering team.
This position can be based at any of the following branches: St Francis, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Sedgefield, George, Mossel Bay, Greyton, or Franschhoek.
Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience within a Wireless ISP (WISP) environment
- Minimum 2 years’ experience at senior / Tier 3 level within a live ISP network
- Proven experience working within a Network Operations Centre (NOC)
- Strong MikroTik RouterOS configuration, troubleshooting, and optimisation experience
- Proven experience with OSPF and BGP routing protocols in production environments
- Strong understanding of VLANs, bridging, firewalling, queues, tunnels, and RouterOS scripting
- MTCNA certification essential
- MTCRE, MTCWE, or MTCINE advantageous
- Strong RF and wireless networking fundamentals
- Experience with point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless platforms such as MikroTik, Cambium, Ubiquiti, or Mimosa
- Experience with spectrum analysis, RF optimisation, alignment, and high-site support
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, subnetting, IPv4/IPv6, NAT, DNS, DHCP, and Layer 2 troubleshooting
- Fibre networking and OLT/ONT exposure advantageous
- Experience with monitoring systems such as The Dude, LibreNMS, Zabbix, PRTG, or Grafana
- Scripting or automation experience advantageous
- Valid South African driver’s licence and reliable transport - Essential
- Strong problem-solving, communication, leadership, and mentoring skills
Responsibilities, but not limited to:
Network Operations and Escalations
- Manage Tier 3 escalations from Helpdesk and NOC teams
- Investigate and resolve complex routing, switching, wireless, and capacity issues
- Monitor wireless and fibre network infrastructure proactively
- Lead incident response and outage management processes
- Participate in standby and after-hours support rotations
RF and Wireless Infrastructure
- Plan, deploy, optimise, and maintain high sites, sectors, and wireless backhaul infrastructure
- Conduct RF analysis, interference mitigation, and capacity planning
- Support field technicians with installations, alignments, and fault finding
- Monitor network performance and optimise subscriber capacity
MikroTik and Routing
- Configure and maintain MikroTik RouterOS devices across the network
- Implement and troubleshoot OSPF, BGP, MPLS/VPLS, VLANs, firewall rules, queues, and tunnels
- Manage backbone links and optimise routing paths for performance and stability
Documentation, Improvement and Mentorship
- Maintain accurate network diagrams, IP documentation, and change records
- Identify recurring network issues and implement long-term improvements
- Mentor and support Tier 1 and Tier 2 engineers
- Collaborate with technical, field, sales, and support teams to ensure service delivery excellence
