We are seeking a reliable, hands-on, and hardworking Depot Assistant to join our team at our Middelburg branch. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, inspection, and general upkeep of containers, equipment, and depot facilities while ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive repairs, refurbishment, and maintenance on both sales and rental containers.
Clean, prepare, and maintain containers to ensure they meet company quality standards.
Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance on containers at the depot and at customer sites.
Travel to client premises to perform on-site container inspections, maintenance, and repairs as required.
Inspect incoming and outgoing containers to assess their condition and identify repair requirements.
Complete accurate inspection reports, maintenance records, and all related documentation.
Repair, refurbish, and maintain steel containers and multi-house container units.
Assemble and install multi-house container structures in accordance with company specifications.
Maintain and repair container roofs, ensuring all units remain weatherproof and watertight.
Operate hand and power tools safely while performing maintenance and repair work.
Maintain depot equipment, tools, workshop facilities, and yard areas in a clean, safe, and operational condition.
Assist with inventory control by participating in stock takes, stock rotation, and stock management activities.
Conduct weekly container stock counts and reconcile stock discrepancies where necessary.
Maintain accurate stock records and support effective inventory control and asset security.
Perform general housekeeping duties to ensure a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
Adhere to all company Health, Safety, Environmental (HSE), and quality policies, procedures, and standards.
Perform any other reasonable duties related to the position as assigned by management.
Minimum Requirements
Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
Minimum of 2 years' general working experience in a maintenance, construction, industrial, or similar environment.
Minimum of 1 years’ experience working with containers or within a container-related environment.
Previous experience in stock taking, inventory control, general maintenance, and basic administration is essential.
Previous experience in container repairs, welding, fabrication, construction, steelwork, or a similar hands-on technical role will be advantageous.
Knowledge & Skills
Fully literate with good reading, writing, and communication skills.
Numerically competent with the ability to perform stock counts, measurements, and basic calculations accurately.
Ability to complete inspection reports, maintenance records, and other administrative documentation accurately.
Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and general workshop equipment.
Good understanding of general maintenance principles and repair techniques.
Strong organisational, planning, and record-keeping skills.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Ability to identify maintenance defects and implement appropriate corrective actions.
Other Requirements
Valid South African driver's licence (essential).
Willingness and ability to travel to client sites to perform inspections, maintenance, and repair work.
Good physical fitness with the ability to perform physically demanding manual labour.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team.
Reliable, dependable, punctual, and safety conscious.
Willingness to work overtime and after-hours when operational requirements demand it.
