The Head Guide FGASA Level 2 FULL TRAILS leads and manages guided tours and safari experiences within the Limpopo region. This role ensures the highest standards of customer service, safety, and environmental stewardship. The position is responsible for delivering educational, engaging, and memorable experiences to guests while adhering to conservation and industry best practises. Job Duties
Conduct and lead full trail guided safaris, ensuring safety, professionalism, and compliance with all regulatory and company policies. Plan and organise daily safari routes and schedules, taking into account weather, wildlife activity, and guest preferences. Provide in-depth knowledge about local flora, fauna, geography, and cultural heritage to enhance guest experience. Manage and mentor junior guides and support staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. Ensure all equipment, vehicles, and resources are maintained to the highest standards and report any issues promptly. Maintain accurate records of tours, guest feedback, and incidents, and provide regular reports to management. Promote sustainable tourism practises and actively contribute to conservation efforts in the region. Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies and medical situations, ensuring guest welfare at all times. Collaborate with other departments to create seamless guest experiences, including accommodation, catering, and transport.
Required Qualifications
FGASA Level 2 Professional Field Guide certification (FULL TRAILS) Valid South African driver’s licence, with a clean driving record
Education
Minimum of a National Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification Additional training in first aid, wildlife management, or conservation is advantageous
Experience
At least five years’ experience as a professional field guide, with demonstrable experience leading full trail safaris Proven track record of working in wilderness or safari environments within South Africa or similar regions Experience in team leadership or supervisory roles is preferred
Knowledge and Skills
Comprehensive knowledge of South African wildlife, ecosystems, and conservation principles Strong communication and storytelling skills to engage diverse audiences Ability to assess and manage risk effectively in outdoor and wilderness settings Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with guests Proficiency in navigation, tracking, and survival skills in remote areas Good organisational and time management skills Competence in vehicle maintenance and basic mechanical troubleshooting Fluency in English; additional languages are an advantage
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced first aid certification or wilderness first responder qualification Additional FGASA specialisations or related certifications Experience in ecotourism or sustainable tourism initiatives
Working Conditions
Work is primarily conducted outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, rain, and dust Extended periods of walking, tracking, and standing are required Work hours include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays as necessary The role requires physical fitness and the ability to operate off-road vehicles in rugged terrain Accommodation may be provided on-site or nearby, depending on operational requirements The role demands a high level of resilience and adaptability to remote and sometimes isolated environments
