Job Summary
The Head Ranger is responsible for leading the guiding department and ensuring exceptional wildlife experiences for guests while maintaining the highest standards of safety, conservation, and hospitality. This role includes managing field guides and trackers, overseeing safari operations, maintaining vehicles and equipment, and promoting sustainable conservation practices. Key Responsibilities • Lead and manage the guiding team, including Field Guides and Trackers. • Conduct exceptional morning, afternoon, and night game drives. • Ensure guest safety and deliver outstanding guest experiences. • Share expert knowledge of wildlife, ecology, birdlife, flora, and local culture. • Plan and coordinate daily safari activities. • Oversee guide training, mentoring, and performance management. • Ensure all guiding activities comply with reserve policies and conservation regulations. • Monitor wildlife movements and maintain accurate sightings records. • Assist with wildlife monitoring, conservation initiatives, and anti-poaching efforts. • Manage guide schedules, leave planning, and duty rosters. • Ensure safari vehicles are maintained, serviced, clean, and equipped. • Conduct regular vehicle and equipment inspections. • Ensure firearms, radios, first aid kits, and safety equipment are correctly maintained. • Assist with lodge operations when required. • Handle guest requests and resolve concerns professionally. • Promote environmental awareness and sustainable tourism practices. • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards. Minimum Qualifications • FGASA Level 2 or higher (Level 3 advantageous) • Valid FGASA Lead Trails Guide qualification (advantageous) • DEAT / NDT Registered Guide • Valid First Aid Level 1 Certificate • Valid Driver's Licence with PrDP • Rifle proficiency and valid firearm competency (where applicable) Experience • Minimum of 5 years' experience as a Field Guide. • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a supervisory or Head Ranger role. • Experience working in a luxury safari lodge environment. • Proven experience leading and mentoring guiding teams.
