The Back-up or Full Trails Guide is responsible for leading and supporting guided tours and trail expeditions. Job Duties
Lead full-day and multi-day guided trails, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants throughout the duration of the guests visiit. Have some or many hours experience but must have experience on foot. Provide detailed interpretation of natural and cultural features encountered on trails, enhancing guest understanding and appreciation. Monitor and manage guest behaviour to ensure compliance with safety guidelines and environmental conservation policies. Maintain and operate trail equipment and vehicles in a safe and responsible manner. Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies or unexpected situations, including administering first aid and coordinating evacuation if necessary. Build positive relationships with local communities, encouraging cultural exchange and supporting sustainable tourism practises. Prepare daily reports on trail conditions, guest feedback and any incidents for management review. Participate in ongoing training and development activities to maintain and enhance guiding skills and knowledge.
Required Qualifications
Relevant certification in wilderness or trail guiding, outdoor leadership or an equivalent recognised qualification. Valid first aid qualification suitable for remote environments. Demonstrable ability to navigate and lead groups safely in remote or challenging terrain. Strong communication skills with the ability to engage and educate diverse groups of guests. FRENCH is advantageous.
Education
Fgasa Back-up, full Trails or if used other traininng providerequilvant thereof Additional formal training in ecology, conservation, tourism or related fields is advantageous.
Experience
Proven experience as a trail or wilderness guide, preferably within Africa or comparable environments. Experience working with international tourists and managing group dynamics. Demonstrated knowledge of local flora, fauna, geography and cultural heritage.
Knowledge and Skills
In-depth knowledge of local wildlife, plants, geography and cultural history relevant to Congo Brazzaville and Southern Africa. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure. Competence in map reading, navigation and use of GPS devices. Proficiency in English; knowledge of French or local languages is highly desirable. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional qualifications in environmental conservation, wildlife management or cultural interpretation. Experience with vehicle maintenance and off-road driving in remote areas. Training in conflict resolution or customer relations.
Working Conditions
The role requires extended periods outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat, humidity and rain. Work involves physical activity such as walking, hiking and carrying equipment over uneven terrain. Occasional overnight stays in remote camps or lodges with limited facilities. Flexible working hours including weekends, public holidays and irregular shifts depending on tour schedules. Exposure to insects, wildlife and natural hazards inherent to wilderness environments.
