Job Summary
POSITION SUMMARY: MANAGER-ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING The position is based at Mkambathi Nature Reserve, and primarily responsible for the northern concession within Mkambati Nature Reserve. The Manager will oversee all concession monitoring operations, coordinate joint patrols with ECPTA Rangers, and ensure effective communication and compliance with established protocols. The role includes developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), managing access control and patrol schedules, supervising the environmental monitor team, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring the safety of all unarmed personnel. The position primarily reports to the Mkambati Conservation and Community NPC (NPO) board with secondary reporting responsibilities to the Concession Technical Manager on matters relating to operational compliance, as well as collaboration with the CEO, COO, and engagement with ECPTA and the Mkambati Land Trust as required. He/She holds authority to lead and direct concession-based monitoring personnel, request operational support from ECPTA, and make informed on-the-ground decisions in coordination with management. He/She is accountable for maintaining ethical, lawful, and effective implementation of all monitoring and incident-prevention measures. The Key responsibility Area’s (KRA’s) will be: · Serve as the primary point of contact for all incident prevention and related matters within the concession. · Oversee all physical monitoring operations across the northern concession of the Mkambati Nature Reserve and GweGwe Lodge. · Coordinate joint patrols, surveillance, and intelligence sharing with ECPTA Rangers. · Ensure clear communication and operational alignment with ECPTA during field deployments. · Develop and enforce SOPs for all concession monitoring operations, including response protocols. · Supervise, train, and support the female environmental monitor team once hired. · Conduct regular risk assessments and maintain an up-to-date monitoring risk register. · Report all access control incidents, threats, and violations promptly and thoroughly. · Participate in the planning and execution of joint training exercises with ECPTA and internal teams. · Supervise gate access control, patrol schedules, and perimeter monitoring. · Ensure that unarmed personnel are protected and operate within clearly defined limits. · Coordinate emergency response protocols for incidents such as theft, fire or trespassing. · Advise the Technical Concession Manager on monitoring strategy and compliance matters. COMMUNITY The Mkambati Land Trust is GweGwe’s landlord and strategic partner. We need to ensure that our relationship with the Trust is always in good standing and that we do our very best to ensure that GweGwe’s operations take into account the needs of the community especially with regard to employment, training and outreach. As much of our grown produce and services should be sourced from the community members. The Lodge Managers may need to sit in on the Joint Liaison Committee with the Trust and ECPTA from time to time.
