Job Specification
1. Current registration with HPCSA as AEA.
2. Must have a valid Code 8 or 10 driver’s license, and PrDP, non-negotiable.
3. Valid HPCSA practising status and CPD compliance
4. Current Basic Life Support for healthcare providers
5. Certificate in Intermediate Life Support
6. Matric with Math’s and Science
7. Minimum of one year’s experience post qualification.
8. Ability to work effectively in a team.
9. Ability to perform and remain calm under high pressure situations.
10. Excellent telephonic/radio communication skills.
11. Excellent communication skills with colleagues, hospital staff and Doctors.
12. Fluent in English. Any additional languages will be advantageous.
13. Flexibility to adapt and cope with changes at short notice.
14. Strong administration skills with attention to detail.
15.Must be PC literate – basic word, excel and e-mail

Job Purpose:
To deliver Intermediate Life Support (ILS) emergency medical care, patient stabilisation and transport services
within the legally authorised AEA scope of practice, as regulated by the Health Professions Council of South Africa
(HPCSA), ensuring safe, ethical, and quality patient care in pre-hospital environments.
The HPCSA recognises Ambulance Emergency Assistants as a formal professional category, with defined clinical
capabilities and authorised medication use outlined in its published List of Capabilities and Medications.
Key Performance Areas:
1. Clinical Care
· Conduct comprehensive patient assessment and clinical decision-making in emergency and non-emergency environments.
· Provide Intermediate Life Support interventions, including airway management, circulatory support, and selected medication administration.
· Perform clinical procedures strictly in accordance with the AEA scope and HPCSA-approved capabilities.
· Manage trauma, medical, obstetric and paediatric emergencies within scope.
· Continuously reassess patients and escalate care appropriately where required.

2. Scope of Practice Compliance
· Practise strictly within the HPCSA AEA scope of practice and authorised capability list.
· Refrain from performing any procedure or administering any medication not authorised for AEA level.
· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of clinical practice guidelines and HPCSA requirements.
3. Patient Transport & Operations
· Respond to emergency calls, interfacility transfers and scheduled transports.
· Responsible driving of emergency vehicles in accordance with company policy and National Road Traffic Act.
· Safely move and transport patients using appropriate equipment and infection control procedures.
· Ensure ambulance readiness, including equipment checks and vehicle cleanliness.
· Safe operating of company vehicles and equipment as per company policies and procedures.
· Report operational risks, equipment failures and stock shortages.
· Practice of strict infection control measures and maintaining a safe, healthy, and accident-free workplace.
· Active participation in continuous development activities aimed at improving and updating clinical and industry related knowledge.
4. Documentation & Communication
· Recording information on patient’s conditions and treatment on Patient Report Form (PRF) in accordance with guidelines published by HPCSA.
· Accurate completion of PRF’s and submission for processing according to scheme and company policy.
· Provide clear handover reports to receiving healthcare practitioners.
· Maintain communication with dispatch, supervisors and healthcare facilities.
5. Driving Competency
· The Employee is required to demonstrate the ability to competently and safely operate an emergency ambulance vehicle under both normal and emergency conditions.
· The possession of a valid driver’s licence and Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) does not in itself constitute competence to operate an emergency vehicle.
· The Employee must successfully complete any practical driving assessment, evaluation, or competency testing as determined by the Company;
· The Employee must demonstrate the ability to:
Ø Safely operate the ambulance in emergency response conditions;
Ø Navigate while conveying patients with due consideration to patient safety and clinical condition;
Ø Comply with all road traffic legislation and emergency driving protocols;
6. Professional Conduct
· Maintain ethical and professional behaviour in line with HPCSA standards.
· Protect patient confidentiality and dignity.
· Participate in CPD, training and quality improvement initiatives.
The employee may only perform acts, procedures and medication administration authorised for the AEA category in accordance with HPCSA guidelines. Any deviation constitutes a breach of statutory scope of practice.
