Role Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Legal & Technical Specialist to join its property lending business within the Alternative Investments division. This role requires a seasoned professional with a strong background in the legal and tech space within property finance, banking, and legal operations, capable of managing the full spectrum of lending processes — from drafting loan documentation to overseeing recoveries. The other focus areas to be supported within the Alternative Investment space include: private capital, Agri finance and alternative energy investments.
Key Responsibilities
- Loan documentation: Draft, review, and finalize property finance loan agreements and related legal documents.
- Commercial contracts: Negotiate and prepare contracts with borrowers, service providers, and stakeholders.
- Recoveries management: assist the recoveries team with legal recoveries processes including insolvency and business rescue matters and related legal and technical matters that arise
- Property finance expertise: Provide technical and legal insights into property finance transactions and legal and drafting of loan agreement market trends.
- Operational efficiency: Streamline legal processes to enhance productivity and reduce risk.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with investment, technical, and operational teams to support lending/investment activities.
- Advisory to credit, front line and legal risk areas and people in the business
Candidate Profile
- Admitted attorney with strong legal grounding.
- Minimum 7 - 10 years’ experience in bank lending/property finance legal and technical teams.
- Background in conveyancing, commercial law, banking, and lending.
- Proven track record in drafting loan documents, managing contracts, negotiation and recoveries.
- Strong solutions driven, commercial understanding of the property market and finance structures.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, broad-scope environment.
- Networked with the top legal firms that deal with banks and other financial service providers, including family offices, private capital and private equity firms and large institutional and private property players
- Strength of character to work within a robust, outcome orientated culture, within a team currently comprising of 11 people (4 in Cape Town and 7 in Johannesburg).
- Someone who would enjoy being involved in a flat structured business, and making critical decisions on a daily basis, overseeing R10bn worth of assets under management.
