Job Summary
A well-established law firm is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Legal Bookkeeper to manage the firm’s trust and business accounting functions. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with legal accounting regulations, managing payroll, VAT submissions, and supporting the firm with administrative and compliance-related duties.
Key Responsibilities Accounting and Bookkeeping
- Perform daily bank reconciliations for both trust and business accounts.
- Maintain complete and accurate bookkeeping records for:
- Trust accounts
- Business accounts
- Manage the monthly billing and invoicing system.
- Prepare and maintain financial reports and supporting schedules.
- Monitor cash flow and account balances.
Payroll and HR Administration
- Process monthly salaries.
- Maintain staff leave records and balances.
Compliance and Regulatory Duties
- Assist with B-BBEE verification and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with FICA requirements and maintain relevant records.
- Prepare and submit VAT returns to South African Revenue Service (SARS).
- Ensure adherence to relevant legal and accounting regulations, including Legal Practice Council trust accounting requirements.
Administrative and IT Support
- Manage and respond to emails.
- Provide assistance to staff with email-related issues and basic troubleshooting.
Reporting and Data Management
- Prepare and maintain advanced Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and reports.
- Analyse financial data and generate management reports as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience as a Legal Bookkeeper in a law firm.
- Solid understanding of legal trust accounting and business accounting.
- Experience with VAT calculations and SARS submissions.
- Knowledge of FICA compliance and implementation.
- Experience with payroll processing and leave administration.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
- Excellent email and administrative skills.
- Fully bilingual in Afrikaans and English (written and spoken).
Must be able to work on Legal Bookkeeping software such as Lexpro etc.
