Machine Specialist – Lucky Star Operations (LSO)
Purpose of the role:
The Machine Specialist is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and optimization of machinery used in the production of fishmeal. This role requires in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment to ensure smooth plant operations.
Key Job Outputs:
Machine Operation and Maintenance:
- Operate and monitor processing machinery, ensuring efficient and safe operation.
- Perform routine maintenance on machinery to prevent downtime and ensure durability.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and address potential issues before they become critical.
- Train operators and make sure that the equipment is stored as per OEM recommendations.
- Plan or schedule the equipment based on performance and OEM recommendation.
- Work with the planning office in creating Planned maintenance for all centrifuge equipment, while consulting with the OEM proposed planned schedules.
Troubleshooting and Repairs:
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and operational problems in machinery.
- Execute repairs promptly to minimize production disruptions.
- Coordinate with other technical staff and management to resolve complex issues.
- Escalate major issues that might lead to the plant start-up and performance.
Installation and Upgrades:
- Install new machinery and equipment as required, ensuring compliance with manufacturer guidelines and safety standards.
- Upgrade existing machinery to enhance performance and efficiency.
- Ensure all installations and upgrades are documented and comply with regulatory standards.
Optimization and Efficiency:
- Analyse machinery performance and recommend improvements to optimize production efficiency.
- Implement best practices for machine operation and maintenance.
- Collaborate with production and quality control teams to ensure product quality.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations while performing duties.
- Ensure all machinery and equipment comply with safety and environmental regulations.
- Conduct safety training sessions for plant staff regarding machine operation and maintenance.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections.
- Prepare detailed reports on machine performance, incidents, and corrective actions taken.
- Keep inventory of spare parts and tools, ensuring adequate stock for maintenance needs.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or a red seal in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 5-10 years of experience working with industrial machinery, preferably in a fishmeal or food processing plant.
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes & Essential Competencies:
- Proficiency in mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems. Knowledge of PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems is advantageous.
- Relevant certifications in industrial maintenance, welding, or mechanical systems are preferred.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the capacity to work under pressure.
- Good communication and teamwork skills are essential.
- Work primarily in an industrial plant setting, with exposure to loud noises, odours, and varying temperatures.
- May be required from time to time to work long hours, including weekends, to cover production schedules and emergencies.
- Ability to lift heavy objects.
- Stamina to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
