About the Role
On behalf of our client, we are seeking a highly strategic, energetic, and compliance-driven SHERQ Manager to join their Senior Management team. Reporting directly to the COO and CFO, you will take full accountability for the strategic development, implementation, management, and continuous improvement of the company’s Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality systems across all warehouses, distribution, retail, and operational facilities.
As a hands-on executive leader, you will oversee a dedicated team (including OHS Officers, an OHS Co-Ordinator, and an OHS Administrator) to minimize operational risk, foster a proactive safety culture, and ensure 100% legal compliance with South African statutory requirements and global ISO standards.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Governance: Develop and execute an aggressive SHERQ strategy aligned with corporate objectives. Oversee monthly/quarterly executive reporting, monitor legal appointments, and ensure multi-site compliance files are continuously audit-ready.
Health & Safety Management: Implement robust OHSA compliance frameworks. Conduct comprehensive risk assessments, lead incident investigations, coordinate SHE committees, and enforce strict warehouse and retail safety standards.
Contractor Compliance: Oversee multi-site contractor onboarding, vetting, permit-to-work protocols, and safety file audits.
Risk Management & Continuity: Develop and maintain operational risk registers, deploy mitigation controls, analyse trend data, and support corporate insurance and business continuity planning.
Quality & Environmental Management: Maintain and audit integrated ISO systems, driving strict adherence to environmental waste, spill control, and quality corrective actions.
Financial & Budgetary Control: Take full accountability for the SHERQ budget, manage procurement, track variances, and optimize resources without compromising compliance standards.
People Management & Training: Lead, mentor, and performance-manage the internal SHERQ team. Coordinate corporate induction training, maintain rigorous training logs, and upskill statutory SHE representatives.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications (Non-Negotiable)
Education: Grade 12 / Matric Certificate alongside a National Diploma or bachelor’s degree in safety management, Environmental Health, Quality Management, Risk Management, or a related commercial field.
Certifications: SAMTRAC qualification is strictly essential. Proven implementation and auditing experience across ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 is also essential.
Experience: 5–7 years of stable, verifiable SHERQ management experience within multi-site warehousing, logistics, distribution, or high-volume industrial/retail environments.
Legislative Expertise: Master-level application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), COIDA, NEMA, Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations, and local municipal Fire Safety By-Laws.
Licensing: Valid driver's license.
References: Must supply contactable professional references from previous employers (Executives or Board Members you directly reported to) for verification.
Highly Advantageous Credentials
NEBOSH General Certificate.
Certified ISO Lead Auditor.
Formal registration with the SACPCMP as a CHSM / PrCHSM.
Incident Investigation Level 3 certification.
Strict Legal Requirements
Please note that due to the nature of this role, the following criteria are non-negotiable. Background screening will be conducted on all shortlisted candidates.
Citizenship: Must be a South African-born citizen with a valid ID.
Criminal Record: Must have a clean criminal background. A person with a criminal record will not be considered.
Credit History: Must have a clear ITC (financial/credit history) with no judgments or defaults.
Remuneration & Benefits
Basic Salary: Senior Management Package (Negotiable based on experience and current salary).
Provident Fund: You will join the Motor Industry (MICFA) Provident Fund (7.5% employee contribution / 8% company contribution).
Annual Bonus: Paid in December in accordance with MICFA Regulations (pro-rata based on months of employment; not included in the starting basic salary).
Leave Days: 18 days leave per annum.
Probation: A 3-month probation period applies to monitor performance prior to permanent appointment.
Working Hours & Environment
Standard Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00 (Daily lunch break of 60 minutes).
Overtime: Requested as required by the nature of the business, paid as per the MIBCO Agreement regarding the BCEA salary threshold.
Environment: Fast-paced retail and warehouse-based corporate environment requiring nationwide oversight and direct field engagement.
Policy Note: A Standard Working Procedures (SWP) manual must be read, signed, and returned to HR within your first week of employment.
