Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Server Engineer to manage, maintain, and support critical server infrastructure within a 24x7x365 production environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the stability, security, and performance of commercial and plant servers through effective administration, monitoring, and maintenance of server hardware, software, and network infrastructure. The role includes managing user accounts and security policies, maintaining system integrity, and ensuring that servers, desktops, and laptops remain protected against viruses, malware, and spyware.
What you'll do:
- Server administration, maintenance and support plus full standby [after hours] to operate all commercial and plant servers in a 24X7X365 production environment.
- Manage the antivirus software installed on all servers, desktops and laptops.
- Ensure that the software is updated regularly.
- Continuously monitor the network and equipment performance.
- On request create user accounts and ensure that security policies are applied and managed.
- Must ensure that all servers, desktops and laptops are updated regularly and are free from any viruses, malware and spyware.
- Must be able to use the software applications onsite.
- Carry out the full range of tasks associated with operating and controlling the installed server hardware and software. This involves the use of multiple software platforms including but not limited to the following: Level 2 working knowledge of HPE Nimble and DL360 technology, VMware technology, and knowledge of all the installed RBCT server software, firmware and hardware. As technology refresh occurs, the server engineer provide support on new infrastructure.
- Must be able to maintain and support the SAN environment (hardware, firmware and software).
- Provide consulting services to RBCT for any proposed changes to the RBCT SAN environment.
- Aid with any planned or unplanned disaster recovery exercise.
- Must be able to maintain and support the VMWare environment.
- Provide consulting services to RBCT for any proposed changes to the RBCT VMWare environment.
- Aid with any planned or unplanned disaster recovery exercise.
- All calls will be logged using RBCT internal systems.
Ensure backups are being completed in all environments i.e. commercial and plant.
- There must be full compliance to the backup storage management.
- Check the previous night’s backups and rectify any issues that might have occurred.
- This is for the commercial and automation backups.
- When required to retrieve data or during data loss, restoring from backup must be achievable.
- Keeping up with technology and assessing against the current environment. This evaluation must be communicated to the RBCT contracts representative. Always adhering to best practices.
- Must be able to execute projects.
- Perform a full range of tasks related to the installation, configuration, setup, replacement or upgrade of existing hardware, software and peripheral equipment.
- Use existing tools, hardware and software at RBCT to “refresh” user environments to ensure that the end users experience never drops below standard levels.
- Provide detailed personal advice and guidance to all ICT staff in the effective use of systems, products and services available to them; demonstrates ingenuity in applying knowledge to non-standard situations.
- Where training, qualification and experience gaps are present plans must be defined and agreed to ensure that the gaps are eliminated.
- Analysing system logs and identifies potential issues with computer systems.
- Introducing and integrating new technologies into existing data centre environments.
- Perform routine audits of systems and software.
- Apply operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
- Adding, removing, or updating user account information, resetting passwords, etc.
- Assist users with general and technical queries.
- Responsibility for security.
- Responsibility for documenting the configuration of the system.
- Troubleshooting any reported problems.
- System performance tuning.
- Ensuring that the network infrastructure is up and running (Power to Switches).
- Check all server enclosures (2 x Commercial, 2 x Automation and the DMZ enclosure) for faults. Log onto each enclosure and assess all monitored variables.
- Check the health status of all VM’s and VM hosts. Log onto vSphere and check that all VM’s are running. This is done for the commercial VM’s and the automation VM’s.
- Review WUG and OPM messages and interfaces to see if there are any issues with regards to space, CPU, etc, on the monitored servers.
- Perform daily tasks namely, account creations, password resets, restores of files, general user assistance, solve issues users might experience on the servers, and check the Anti-Virus and that it is updated on all servers and workstations and update those that are out of date.
- Prepare the commercial and plant backup tapes for pickup and after the new tapes arrive, prepare them in the library for the weekend’s backups. Check that the correct jobs run over the weekend.
