QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
AT APPOINTMENT
- Engineering Degree or similar Engineering Qualification
- Minimum 3 years on-site management/supervision experience
- Minimum 3 years Engineering Underwriting experience
- FAIS Fit and Proper Compliant
- FAIS Representative – Not under supervision
- Computer Literacy: Microsoft Office
- Valid driver’s license
SUBSEQUENT TO APPOINTMENT
- Engineering / Commercial Insurance training both formal and “on the job” resulting in sound technical underwriting capability
- Comprehensive understanding of insurance legislation
- Various practical industry courses and on the job coaching
- Training on advanced engineering insurance products
- Continuous Professional Development
TRAVEL REQUIRED
- As and when required (Local & Abroad)
MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION
- Underwriting of both local and international engineering business
- Organising and conducting surveys of large/complex engineering risks for clients, including preparing internal and external reports (if required).
- Assessing individual risks, evaluating and providing terms and conditions in accordance with the applicable underwriting authority, underwriting guidelines, and internal directives
- Ensuring that risk acceptance is aligned with company goals and company and group strategies.
- Developing and growing a sustainable book of business and exploiting new business potentials through active development of relationships with clients.
- Developing innovative insurance solutions and products in addition to conventional covers in close cooperation with other Santam business units - "can-do mindset”.
- Evaluating and preparing special treaty acceptance requests

KEY FUNCTIONS
Facultative Engineering Underwriter:
- Understanding Engineering insurance risks
- Comprehension of Engineering policy wordings
- Training of brokers and cedants on insurance products
- Accurate quotations and checking of slips and providing commensurate capacity
- Material preparation for training functions
- Ad-Hoc functions assisting the Marketing Department
- Conducting surveys of engineering risks for clients, including preparation of reports
- Extend our footprint as a recognised insurance partner by assessing, proposing, and negotiating the insurance conditions for projects
- Work closely with the existing team in respect of clients and brokers
- Respond to new submissions quickly and effectively
