An Instrument Technician position involves working with monitoring equipment which is found in industrial processing. You will be required to install, test and maintain monitoring instruments. You may be responsible for designing new devices which can be used for evaluations. Other duties may include performing risk assessments and reviewing manufacturer’s manuals. If you are designing devices, you may need to collaborate with engineers. Training apprentices is another responsibility which is associated with this position.
The work conditions for Instrument Technicians are varied. The hours and place where you will work will change from job to job. You may find positions which will require you to work regular hours, however shift work is also available in some companies. Some positions work on a rotation schedule of one week on, one week off while others require you to be on-call after hours. Instrument technician jobs may require you to deal with adverse conditions such as noisy or hot environments. Instrument Technicians must also be cautious of safety hazards and take the necessary precautions to prevent an accident. The equipment which is used for this position includes computer software as well as calculators. Voltage meters also come in handy.

Employment opportunities can be found in commercial manufacturing, mining or industrial construction.
