5 useful tips for effective Retail Management
Thinking of working yourself up into a Retail Management position? Retail managers work in fast-paced and competitive environment and face a wide range of challenges on a daily basis.
There are a few things you should know before you venture into this realm of the retail sector. A Retail Manager needs to maximize productivity. Sales targets are high, retail hours are long and the retail staff that managers deal with are most likely to be inexperienced and / or working on a part-time basis.
Retail Manager responsibilities usually include managing and recruiting staff, managing time efficiently so that targets are reached, building motivated sales and service teams and managing changes. All these aspects are interdependent, so Retail Managers need to be good at all of them to be truly effective.

1. Manage your time efficiently: If you know how to manage time in the right way, you’ll be a very effective retail manager. You need to know to say “no” to unreasonable demands, how to identify and get rid of time wasters that are dragging down productivity, how to handle interruptions and how to identify and distinguish problems you have to deal with right away and issues that can wait to be solved at a later time.
2. Manage and lead your staff: Retail Managers should encourage staff to manage themselves and to communicate with each other on all levels to ensure a healthy work environment. Retail Managers should also ideally coach staff to achieve the results they want and set realistic goals and follow-up dates.
3. Teamwork makes the job easier: Retail Managers should trust their staff to work and solve problems on their own. To accomplish this they need to establish group goals, delegate responsibility, align staff and their roles for effective cross-training and co-operation, identify and secure equipment and resources to ensure staff do their jobs well and motivate their staff regularly. They also need to leverage differences and value the diversity of their staff.
4. Embrace and manage the constant change experienced in the retail sector: To be an effective Retail Manager you need to anticipate change, lead the group problem solving process, champion innovation, reduce resistance from staff to change and manage the transition. Remember: Changes in aspects like styles and customer needs are constant and it drives success in retail.
5. Leadership is not reserved for top management: A good Retail Manager learns to move from focusing on day-to-day activities to focusing on implementing strategies for moving the organizations they work for into the future. Rather lead than follow. Be an inspiration for your staff and the company that you work for.
