How to tell if a job ad is legit or not

How-to-tell-if-a-job-ad-is-legit-or-notAs if looking for a job isn’t already hard enough, now you have to go around and check if a job ad is legitimate or a scam. To make it much easier for you, I am going to give you a few tips to look out for when checking if a job ad is legit.

As a job search engine, Job Mail prides itself in identifying scams and rip offs. Job Mail does its best to ensure that candidates are not at a risk of identity theft because of these scams.

So before you apply for a job, here is what you should look out for:

The first thing you should look at is the company. Instead of using the link provided on the job advert, take the time to research the company online. Simply type the name of the company on a search engine like Google and look at how the company describes itself professionally.

Another thing that can help you, are social networking sites. Twitter and Facebook have search options where you can search a term or hashtag (#) and follow it through. Find out what people are saying about the company. Depending on what you find, you will be able to tell how legitimate a company is; you might find that people have been scammed by the company in the past.

Another hint that can help you determine whether or not a job ad is legit is the job details and/or description. You can check for three things, 1. Have they included details of the salary: 2. Have they mentioned what the job will entail 3. Where will you be based?

For example, a legit IT position, would have the following description:

Company Name: IT Recruitment SA

Where: Gauteng

Job and Job Description: IT Engineer in South Africa

We are a South African IT Recruitment Agency looking for an IT Engineer. Our client is looking for a technologically minded individual who will be in charge of configuration and network support management within the company.

Salary: Negotiable

Requirements:

You need to have at least 2-5 years’ experience in IT, a report and analysis background in Information Technology, a three year degree in IT, a driver’s licence and the ability to work within a team.

Minimum Requirements (not a must):

  • Audits Planned and Performed
  • Operations- Log all, monitor and configuration and data analysis
  • Planned and Performed client requirements.

If you fit these requirements you can fax or email your CV to:

Fax: 0866894582

Email: noname[@]itrecruitmentSA.co.za

You should be provided with sufficient details about the job as well as the qualifications needed to apply for this job. This ad is a good indication of a legit job.
Another way to check if a job ad is legit or a scam, is a payment option. IF YOU ARE ASKED TO PAY, IT IS A SCAM.

It is very simple really, recruitment agencies are paid by the companies hiring them already, so if a recruitment agency requires you to make a payment it is a scam. This also applies to companies that ask you to make a payment for training.

It is important to be vigilant when job hunting, use these tips to find your ideal job.

Are you looking for your dream job? Browse through the Job Mail website for IT jobs and other ideal jobs.

Hi Mike – We are not affiliated with Best Jobs. We have not received any complaints about them, but be careful when you respond to your job ads. Don’t travel exuberant distances or pay someone money for an interview.

Hi, I found a job ad on Gumtree (I’m already a bit weary of jobs on that site) and I applied for the job on the site. I received an email back quite quickly asking what my current salary is and what my salary expectations are. After replying they then asked for a copy of my ID, payslip (weird) and copies of my qualifications and asked to sign forms. They also said they will have to meet with me. Their website is http://www.mrrs.co.za. It doesn’t look professional and I’m a bit scared. Can you help?
